The following strategies are the most common practices that can help reduce harm and risk for skin infection during injection drug use. Harm reduction involves a range of support services and strategies to enhance the knowledge, skills, resources, and supports for individuals, families and communities to be safer and healthier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIVE WAYS TO AVOID INFECTION<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  1. Make sure your hands are clean.<\/li>
  2. Clean injection site with soap and water or with alcohol wipes before injecting.<\/li>
  3. Reduce handling your cotton or other supplies with your bare hands to reduce bacteria.<\/li>
  4. Do not use alcohol wipes after shooting up- it prolongs bleeding.<\/li>
  5. Do not lick the tip of the needle before shooting- this spreads bacteria.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    SAFER SHOOTING TIPS OF HARM REDUCTION<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    1. When you think you\u2019ve found a vein, pull back slightly on the plunger. If blood flows into the rig, you\u2019re ready to go.<\/li>
    2. Release tourniquet slowly AFTER you hit a vein, but BEFORE you inject.<\/li>
    3. Apply pressure to the injection site for one minute following injection.<\/li>
    4. Find a multiple usable veins and ALTERNATE between them with each injection. Good spots will last longer if you don\u2019t shoot in \u00a0them too much. <\/li><\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      FOUR FACTORS THAT WILL SHAPE WHERE YOU STICK A <\/strong>SYRINGE.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      1.  Where you are getting off: <\/strong> If you are someplace comfortable where you can take your time vs. some place you have to be sneaky and finish<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      2. What you are using:<\/strong>  If you\u2019re on a coke run, you are going to use your hit spots more than if you are getting your dope fix<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      3.  Who you\u2019re using with:<\/strong>  Are you getting off by yourself?  This means you\u2019re going to hit yourself someplace you can reach. Or, you never hit yourself which means the other person needs to  know what they are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      4.  Frustration:<\/strong> You want to get off, and if you get really frustrated, it can make you impulsive!  The truth is sometimes you are gonna be sick, and you want to be well FAST.  Take this into consideration when you make your plans!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      NECK ISHIGH RISK<\/strong>\u00a0Why? The carotid artery is here.\u00a0 Hit this and you can bleed to death. Total last resort!\u00a0 Only very experienced.
      ARMS IS\u00a0LOWEST RISK<\/strong>, Best choice. Upper arm is better than lower.\u00a0 Why? Its closer to the heart.\u00a0 Taking good care of your arm veins pays off:\u00a0 you won\u2019t have to get off in harder riskier places. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      HANDS IS RELATIVE LOW RISK.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Lots of rollers here, it can be harder than you think to get a good shot. If you scar or track here, you can hide it.\u00a0 If you blow your veins here, your hands can stay swollen.\u00a0 Use the narrowest needle you can get here. \u00a0Let your spot heal between injections.
      GROIN IS HIGH RISK\u00a0<\/strong>Why?\u00a0 The femoral vein is big, and fairly easy to find.\u00a0 But its really close to the femoral nerve and artery.\u00a0 Be sure to avoid the artery by checking for a pulse.\u00a0 If you feel it, don\u2019t hit there. Move a short distance toward the inside of your leg to find the vein.\u00a0 You may not see it.\u00a0 Don\u2019t try to hit here unless you really know how to hit \u201cblind\u201d.
      LEGS: MEDIUM RISK<\/strong>\u00a0Why?\u00a0 Circulation problems. The blood in your legs is a long way from your heart. \u00a0Getting off in your legs veins is more likely than your arms to leave blood clots, which can break off and get lodged in your heart or lungs.
      FEET: MEDIUM RISK\u00a0<\/strong>Why?\u00a0 Veins here take a long time to heal.\u00a0 Circulation is very slow. \u00a0Its also hard to keep a healing spot clean when you wear shoes and socks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
